Method
Every statement on Scripta Mundi links a person to a book in a role, and names the sources that say so. Nothing is shown that is not recorded with its source.
Confirmed and single source
Confirmed — two independent sources agree, at least one of them a library catalogue, the title page itself, or a reference bibliography.
Years of life marked “one source” come from a single source; all other years are confirmed by two.
Single source — one source states it. Most bindings, signatures and owners are known only from the description of a single copy, so they stay here until a second independent source appears.
Quotations
Quotations are copied from the source as recorded. From a bookseller’s description we quote the sentence that carries the statement; “…” marks where the recorded passage was cut. The words that carry the statement are highlighted.
Links
A source is linked only if its link has been opened and shown to lead to the right record. Other catalogue records are given by their number.
Identity checked by hand
✓ Identity checked by hand — when the sources did not decide between several people of the same name, the identity was chosen by hand by F. V. Marin, and is marked as such.
This copy and this edition
A name given “as …” is the name the source uses, such as a pseudonym.
An author, printer or illustrator belongs to the whole edition. A binding, a signature or an owner belongs to one copy; those statements are marked This copy.
Riviere
A binding signed “Bound by Riviere” is recorded under Robert Riviere; “Riviere & Son”, and any binding on an edition published after his death in 1882, under the firm Riviere & Son (from 1881).
What is not shown
4 statements name a person whose identity is not established; they appear on the book page only, without a page of their own. 0 books have no year in their sources; no year is given for them. 1 statement was withdrawn after review: the source turned out to speak about another edition. It stays in our records with its source, but is not shown.
